Not only was Jack Johnson the first black heavyweight boxing champion, but he was also America’s first black pop culture icon—had he been alive today, he would have perhaps attracted the most followers on social media or in the online press. As a heavyweight boxer, he was a large man and easily intimidating at first sight. Perhaps that makes it easier to imagine why he might have been so off putting, but it was of course much more than that that lead America to fear him.
